ESSAY COMPETITION FOR THE GRAHAM TUCKER AWARD

The Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, within the University of Toronto, The Centre for Spirituality at Work, and the Continuing Education Division of the Toronto School of Theology, are pleased to announce the first annual essay competition on the theme of:

SPIRITUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE

This award honours the Reverend Dr. Graham Tucker, who founded, and for many years served in the King-Bay Chaplaincy, and was a leading founder of the Canadian Centre for Ethics & Corporate Policy. As well, he has been involved with the creation of the Centre for Spirituality at Work and has a continuing interest in the inter-relationship of spirituality, ethics, values and the world of business.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The competition is open to students registered in a Canadian University or Theological School.

GUIDELINES

The general theme is "Spirituality in the Workplace"

 

Following are some possible ideas that might be developed:

  • Address how spiritual values relate to and apply to the workplace
  • Ways that justice, inclusivity and equality of opportunity get lived out in business
  • Are there fundamental values for a code of conduct that underlie the differences in cultural values
  • Are there spiritual values that could inform corporate transitions or are there corporate transitions that can be informed by spiritual values
  • A history of spirituality in the workplace
  • A case study
  • An exploration of the connections between spirituality and business

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

Criteria will include relevance of the topic selected to the competition theme, reference to existing literature, citation of sources, clarity of organization, writing style and cogency of argument.

 

AWARD

One cash prize of $2500.00 will awarded to the author of the winning essay selected by a panel composed of academics and practitioners.

The winner will be announced by MAY 31, 1999. The sponsors will request permission to publish the winning essay.

SUBMISSION AND DEADLINES

Please submit 3 copies of your essay, double-spaced in 12 point type with adequate margins, and not exceeding 4000 words, by APRIL 30, 1999 to either:
