Reiki’ is a Japanese word; it means universal life energy.
To comprehend what Reiki is, one must understand the meaning of the word ki (or ‘chi’ in Chinese). Ki is the power of the universe, an energy which is all-empowering. It is the source of life. Every living thing depends on ki to maintain life. Without it, nothing lives.
Ki is best illustrated through the martial arts. In acknowledging and understanding ki, the martial artist is able to master the technique of harnessing it so that ki manifests itself into physical strength within his body. This ki enables him to perform feats of strength which most uninitiated are not able to do.
Like the martial artist, the Reiki channel draws in ki and fills her whole being with it. But unlike the martial artist, she does not allow this ki to manifest itself into physical strength; instead the overflow passes through the palms of her hands. In placing her palms on someone, the energy flows from her to the person. During a Reiki treatment, this is what happens and healing can begin in any or all of the following ways - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
As the energy flows during a Reiki treatment, the recipient’s higher self directs the energy to where healing is needed. It is important to remember that the Reiki channel is not a healer but a mere vessel - a conduit - through which the universal energy flows. She simply facilitates the process of bringing Reiki to someone who has need of it and allows herself to be used as a conduit for the universal energy.
In a Reiki treatment, the Reiki channel places her hands on various parts of the recipient’s body. It must be noted that these hand positions are not meant in any way to be intrusive or invasive. At any time, if the recipient is not comfortable with a hand position, he/she must tell the Reiki channel who will move her hands to a position acceptable by the recipient.
Reiki relaxes and aligns the body, mind and spirit, reminding each of its own inherent ability to heal. It helps the individual rediscover and accept the gentle soft emotions - love, compassion, charity - which exist within. The path to healing lies in the balance of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki facilitates this remarkably well.
After a treatment, one feels rested, relaxed and peaceful. This is the commencement of healing. We suggest that the individual retain this feeling for as long as is possible by not allowing himself or herself to be drawn into situations activated by negative emotions.
Within this wonderful universe of ours there are many mysteries, mysteries which are well beyond the realm of human understanding. Ki is one of them and Reiki is one of its extensions.

Reiki has become a way of life with John and Chrystalla.
They have embraced the principles of Reiki and each day they endeavour to live by those principles. Putting their trust in a benevolent universe and working with Reiki, John and Chrystalla are thankful for the opportunity to pursue a path which allows them to function more as loving, caring and compassionate human beings.
Though the journey is often arduous and trying, they are determined to face the tests. By helping someone find acceptance and forgiveness, discover love and peace, they believe that, in some small way, they can assist a person to heal from within. They feel this is the least they can do for another human being and is worth all the tests they face.
"Reiki has given me a new lease in life," declared John. "When I was first introduced to Reiki, I was very skeptical and also very ill. That was almost six years ago. Today, I am much better, my health has recovered and I am very grateful to Reiki for that."
Said Chrystalla, "I felt I had come ‘home’ when I received my first Reiki treatment. It felt right. And watching John recover and discovering my own healing convinced me of its value. Thank you, Dr. Usui, Dr. Hayashi and Mrs. Takata. You have given the world a wonderful gift."
John came from a successful corporate background. "Despite the elation of success in the business world, one invariably feels a vacuum from within. It never seemed to be enough; there is always a need for more," recalls John. His ill-health triggered a burning desire to discover for himself a path to peace and wellness. He found Reiki and spirituality.

Chrystalla had spent a major part of her career working with people with disabilities. Her sincere care and deep belief in those she worked with brought tremendous healing to many. John’s own healing consolidated her faith in Reiki. Today she is a strong advocate of Reiki.
In 1995, they developed an outreach program, attracting many Reiki channels to work with them, to bring Reiki to those who needed healing. They worked with people afflicted with various different ailments; they visited homes and hospitals. The benefits which everyone connected with this program derived were tremendous.
In that same year, they initiated another program designed to cater to the community at large and to give Reiki treatments once a week to those who came. Out of the basement of a church in High Park, the treatments were given on a ‘by donation’ basis. The program proved so popular that another group was created in a building at the harbour front. This proved immensely popular as well.
In their search for a permanent home for the program, John and Chrystalla teamed up with a community centre in 1998, bringing the two groups together. Reiki treatments are now given regularly twice a week to anyone wishing to receive it.
John and Chrystalla also conduct regular workshops to teach Reiki - Level I, Level II, Master’s Program - to those who want to learn the art. Whenever they can, they travel within Ontario to give seminars and talks and have been guests of many organizations which wanted to learn more about Reiki.
They also run a private practice giving Reiki to those who want to receive private treatments or counselling from either one of them.
Their vision for the future is to create a Reiki centre and clinic where wellness is the focus and where people can come to learn and/or receive Reiki. They just know that one day this dream will become a reality.
