The Centre for Spirituality at Work

INVITES YOU TO TWO EVENTS:

REINVENTING WORK

Matthew Fox

Friday, September 19, 2003
12:15pm to 1:15pm
St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, King Street just west of University Ave, Toronto

For more than 30 years, Matthew Fox, PhD, has been uncovering the repressed tradition of creation spirituality and its mystical-prophetic figures like Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and others. He has been honoured by numerous awards including the Peace Abbey Conscience Award, also granted to the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, and Rosa Parks. Dr. Fox is founder and president of the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, California (www.creationspirituality.com) a former Dominican and now Episcopal priest, and author of 26 books, including Original Blessing and his newest, Creativity: Where the Divine and the Human Meet.

One of his most famous books, and the focus of both this talk and of the doctoral program at UCS, is The Reinvention of Work. Fox views work as sacrament. It is the creative expression of each unique soul, coming from the inside out as an expression of the Spirit at work in the world through us. Work's purpose is service to the immediate and global community, both in actual goods and in contributing a social energy in which we each play our role in the unfolding creation drama of the universe. Humans need good work and so much good work needs doing in our time--much of it work on the human heart--inner work and soul work that can inspire our outer work and help us to reinvent it.

Do join us for this rare opportunity in Toronto to be in the presence of Matthew Fox.

Enter through the main doors facing King Street West, between Roy Thomson Hall and University Avenue.

Books will be for sale, provided by Crux Bookstore at Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, 5 Hoskin Avenue.

A Dialogue:
Given the darkness of our time, we have become aware that while we cannot return to the naiveté of the pre-modern worldview, we cannot consciously remain in the confines of modernity.

Join scholars Matthew Fox and Randall Heskett, as they explore the future of Christianity in light of post-modern demands for pluralism, an eco-consciousness, and a global ethic that honours justice and responsibility as well as mystical awe and wonder. This dialogue between a spiritual theologian and a biblical theologian will address these concerns.
Creation Spirituality integrates the wisdom of Western spirituality and global indigenous cultures with the emerging scientific understanding of the universe and the passionate creativity of art. Creation Spirituality is not a new religion. It is the earliest tradition of the Hebrew Bible and was celebrated by the mystics of medieval Europe. Creation Spirituality provides a solid foundation and holistic perspective from which to address the critical issues of our times, including the revitalization of religion and culture, the honoring of women's wisdom, the celebration of hope in today's youth, and the promotion of social and ecological justice. It is concerned with developing theologies and practices within religion and culture that promote personal wholeness, planetary survival, and universal interdependence.

Matthew Fox, Ph.D.
For more than 30 years, Matthew Fox has been uncovering the repressed tradition of creation spirituality and its mystical-prophetic figures like Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and others. He has published 26 books including Original Blessing, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen, One River, Many Wells, and Creativity: Where the Divine and the Human Meet. Thomas Berry has called him the "most creative religious thinker in North America." Matthew is the recipient of numerous awards including the Peace Abbey Conscience Award, which has also been given to the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa and Rosa Parks.
An innovative educator, he designed a unique pedagogy for teaching spirituality that began as a master's program in Culture and Creation Spirituality at Mundelein College in Chicago 26 years ago. Now located in downtown Oakland California, it has since evolved into the University of Creation Spirituality of which he is founder and president. Fox is also co-director of the Naropa Oakland Master's program in creation spirituality.

Randall Heskett, Ph.D.
Randall Heskett presently teaches Old Testament and Biblical Interpretation at Trinity College, University of Toronto and has taught at Queen's University, McMaster University, and Emmanuel College of Victoria University. He has pastored four churches, ranging from the conservative evangelical wing to the liberal mainline wing and has worked as a marriage and family therapist.
Beginning with the Torah and Gospel as subject matter, he seeks to integrate the academic, intellectual, practical, and spiritual aspects of theology without sacrificing its solid foundation. For example, Heskett states: "...modern scholarship has dissected the care of the live human being into broken physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual pieces but has neglected the whole person. Specialized disciplines often lose sight of the general principles that hold all the concentra-tions together and dignify the whole person. Biblical critics have atomized the biblical testimony and have historically reconstructed the pre-biblical traditions of a disconnected and fragmented Bible that is no longer a whole. Isolated theological disciplines have divided the integral purposes of the academy even more. Therefore, we have failed to reckon with the greater whole."

Carol P. Vaccariello, D.Min. is the Co-Director of the Doctor of Ministry/Certificate Programs at the University of Creation Spirituality. Carol is a Priest/Minister with dual standing in the Independent Catholic Movement and Christian Church (DOC). She plans and assists as a Ritual Leader for the Techno Cosmic Mass.
Carol's Topic: Art as Meditation is a time of connecting with the deeper aspects of our being; a time of personal healing as we bathe in soothing music and create heart-art while being held in the stillness.

Please join us for this very special event in the magnificent sanctuaries of these two historic churches in downtown Toronto. To learn more about St. James Cathedral (www.StJamesCathedral.on.ca) and Metropolitan United Church (www.MetUnited.org), please consult their websites.
