(D2) Shadow Work: A Key to Effective Leadership
Bill De Foore
Thur. 3:30 p.m.; Jun. 3, 1999
In the myth of Icarus, we find that "The closer we fly to the light, the larger the shadow we cast". The converse is true, as we find in the quote from Robert Bly: "A person who absorbs the shadow becomes not dark, but light and playful".
The shadow contains all those aspects of ourselves and our organizations that are denied, rejected or simply unknown. Shadow work is based on the understanding that there is tremendous value hidden in these discarded aspects of our personal and business lives. Participants will learn practical tools for identifying, exploring and embracing shadow as a means of accessing the knowledge, insight and energy that is stored there.
Business communication processes will be discussed that allow organizations to

prevent the sabotage that can result from unexplored shadow and

access and utilize the tremendous energy, compassion and creativity that

resides in the shadow of the workforce.
